Arts Funding

I am a professional artist.  I am an actor and stage technician.  As the Production Manager for two not for profit theaters in Asheville, I am very much aware of the importance of the arts in our community.  Arts organizations are drivers of the economy, accounting for a significant portion of our tourism industry, fueling hotel and restaurant sales, and drawing people from around the globe.  Our arts culture is a major part of what makes Asheville a top tourist destination.

As the current administration and the GOP led state legislators slash funding to the arts and humanities, federal grants are becoming more and more scarce, and the burden of this de-funding falls on small arts organizations.  These groups already operate on a very small margin of error, and many would face bankruptcy and failure if public funding were made unavailable.

We cannot rely solely on the private sector to make up the loss of support in our arts community.  Many arts organizations have done so, and many have closed as a result.

I will fervently seek out opportunities for arts scholarships and grants to allow local arts organizations the freedom to continue creating world-class art in Buncombe County.  I will partner with the Board of Education to create arts education programs to continue the culture of excellence this community has enjoyed for generations. I will fight to ensure the arts are included in county curriculum.
